Loving oneself can feel like a foreign concept when one has spent years criticizing, comparing, or condemning. Society often encourages measuring worth based on appearance, accomplishments, or rejection. However, the truth is that value isn’t defined by what is done or how one looks; it is rooted in the fact that God is the Creator.
In the Bible, we see an example of this in the story of the woman at the well in John 4. She was a Samaritan woman, rejected by society and ashamed of her past. Yet, Jesus approached her with love and grace, offering her living water and reminding her that her worth wasn’t determined by past mistakes or societal rejection. Despite everything, Jesus saw her as valuable, and He extended His love without hesitation.
Many people struggle with the idea of loving themselves, feeling that their worth must be earned through performance, looks, or achievements. Yet, these efforts rarely bring lasting satisfaction. True fulfillment comes when one understands how God sees them. God says that they are chosen, beloved, and made in His image. In 1 Peter 2:9, it says, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” This is how God sees each person; not because of what has been done, but because of what Jesus did.
When self-love feels difficult, it’s important to pause and reflect on the One who created. The God who designed each person with care and purpose. One is not a mistake. One is not beyond repair. They are wonderfully made. The more one leans into God’s love, the clearer the understanding becomes that they are worthy, cherished, and enough in His eyes.
